Comparative Article Review The Great Depression Essay

Two articles written about the Great Depression, one by James Struthers and the other by John Manley, each article takes a different view on the depression. One is looking exclusively at the politics and the other looking a public organizations and party formations, each showing a fear of foreign ideals. All of this would shape the way in which the working and middle class would look at and provide input into future governments. Let’s look at the differences first, James Struthers you can see by title alone that this article is on the unemployment policy and will look at the government and the Prime ministers of the 1930’s. John Manley article you can see by the title that you will be looking at reforms and different organizations†¦show more content†¦James Struthers opens and asks general questions such as why did the depression take us by surprise? Or why did we not follow in the Britain’s footsteps and create things like a national system of unempl oyment insurance if a state employment service to cope the joblessness? Along with the idea that the depression would pass in time like it has done in the past, and that the overall argument was that the joblessness was due to the seasonal work and the government thought that these seasonal workers were paid enough to keep them going through the winter. Another factor was that unions were not powerful until World War Two. Now if you look at John Manley’s article you see that his technique is different in the sense that it is written in a two column format with no breaks in between, and Open up his article by how the Communist Party of Canada (CPC) formed the National Unemployed Workers’ Association (NUWA), and how they fought for unemployment insurance or compensation, and how the police tried to repress the NUWA. The NUWA had economic demands for cash relief, free electricity, free gas, free water, and were against evictions. To spread their message the NUWA went d oor to door and gained some new members.
